If you want a private cooking class in Granada, the choice comes down to one question: do you want to go to a kitchen, or have the kitchen come to you? We bring the lesson to your villa, apartment or rented house, with a French-trained chef teaching only your group. Prices start at €75 for the Tapas Masterclass, and the paella, pastry and Mediterranean classes are listed at €75 to €85. Everything is below, with advice on choosing and preparing.
TL;DR
- A private class means your own group, your own pace and your own menu, cooked in the kitchen where you are staying.
- Our classes are listed at €75 for the Tapas Masterclass, €85 for the Paella Cooking Experience, French Pastry Workshop and Mediterranean Cooking Class, and €150 for the Market to Table Experience.
- Allergies, coeliac needs and other dietary requirements are planned into the menu before the day, not improvised on it.

What a private class in Granada really is
Search for cooking classes in Granada and you will find several kinds of offer. There are group workshops in a teaching kitchen, where you share the bench with strangers. There are tour-style classes that begin in a meeting-point square. There are Spanish-language schools that bundle cooking with lessons and accommodation. And there are home tutors who come to you for regular lessons.
A private class sits in a different place. It is a single session, for your party only, usually built around a dish or a theme you choose: paella, tapas, French pastry, a Mediterranean menu. You cook, you taste, and then you sit down to eat what you have made.
That suits a few kinds of reader especially well:
- Families and friends on a villa holiday who want an activity that ends in dinner.
- Couples who prefer a quiet, unhurried evening to a crowded workshop.
- Hosts and organisers planning a birthday, anniversary or hen weekend and wanting something more memorable than a restaurant table.
- Residents who want to learn one dish properly, with a professional watching their hands.
The trade-off is honest to state. A group academy in the city centre gives you a fixed timetable and a lower entry price, and you can walk in as a solo traveller. A private class gives you control over date, menu and company. If you are travelling alone and simply want a social afternoon, a group session may suit you better. If you are six or twelve people sharing a villa, the private route is usually the more relaxed one.
The classes we teach
Chef Joseph Warner is the founder of The Sensory Chef. He trained in traditional French gastronomy, has more than 13 years of professional experience, and has run professional kitchens as a head chef. Here is how that experience translates into classes. All prices below are those published on our site.
| Class | What you cook | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Tapas Masterclass | A spread of Andalusian-style tapas | €75 |
| Paella Cooking Experience | Paella, from the base to the table | €85 |
| French Pastry Workshop | Classic French pastry technique | €85 |
| Mediterranean Cooking Class | A Mediterranean menu | €85 |
| Market to Table Experience | Ingredients chosen locally, then cooked | €150 |
Our paella workshops in your Granada villa are listed from €75 per person. Because some listings are per class and others per person, please confirm with us exactly what your quote covers, including ingredients and group size, when you enquire.
Paella, the class most guests ask for
Paella is the dish visitors want to take home, and it is also the easiest to get wrong. The rice, the heat, the timing of the stock and the patience to leave it alone all matter. In a private class you cook it at your own table, with your own pan in front of you, rather than watching a demonstration from the back of a room. Details are on the paella cooking experience page, and if you are planning a larger party, the Paella Feast and Andalusian Paella Experience are the dining versions, where the chef cooks and you enjoy.
Tapas, the easiest first class
If your group includes beginners, children or people who say they cannot cook, tapas is a good place to start. Dishes are small, quick and forgiving, and everyone can take a part. The Tapas Masterclass is also the lowest-priced class we list, which makes it a sensible choice for a relaxed afternoon before dinner out in the Albaicín or along the Carrera del Darro.
French technique and pastry
This is where our training shows most. Joseph trained in French gastronomy, and the classes on French cuisine techniques and private French cooking classes teach the foundations: knife work, sauces, timing, seasoning. The French Pastry Workshop is for guests who would rather work with butter, flour and patience than with a paella pan.

Market to Table
Granada has good food shopping, and choosing ingredients is half the pleasure of Andalusian cooking. The Market to Table Experience begins with fresh, local ingredients and ends with a meal you have cooked from them. Ask us about the plan for the day when you book, so the timing suits market opening hours and your own schedule.
A sensory approach to teaching
Joseph is a deaf chef, and he has developed a way of cooking that rests on flavour, texture, aroma and presentation. In a class, that shapes how he teaches. He shows rather than lectures. You are encouraged to smell the garlic as it softens, to feel when dough has come together, to watch the colour of a sauce change. These are the signals a good cook reads, and they are easier to learn by attention than by instruction sheet.
For many guests this is the difference they remember. The class is quiet in the right way, calm and focused on the food.
Our perspective: why we teach in your kitchen
We built The Sensory Chef around private dining in villas across Granada and Andalusia, and cooking classes grew naturally from it. Guests would watch dinner come together and ask to join in.
Here is what we have learned. A class works best when it is shaped around the people in it. A table of friends who love wine and lingering lunches needs a different rhythm from a family with teenagers, and a couple celebrating an anniversary wants something else again. A fixed public timetable cannot do that. A private chef can.

There is also a practical point. Cooking in the kitchen you are staying in means no taxis, no timetables, no leaving children behind or driving home after a glass of wine. When the class ends, dinner is already on your own table.
We would rather you leave with one dish you can cook confidently at home than with ten you half remember. So we teach fewer things, properly.
— Joseph Warner
Dietary requirements and allergies
This is where private classes are far better than a group session. We plan the menu with your requirements in view before the day. If someone in your party is coeliac, allergic to nuts or shellfish, vegetarian or vegan, tell us when you enquire and the menu is built around it, not adjusted at the stove.
We offer gluten-free cooking workshops in Granada, built for coeliacs, and we explain our approach to accommodating dietary needs on our site.
A few practical points:
- Give us the specifics: the allergen, how severe it is, and whether trace amounts matter.
- Mention any dislikes as well. They are easier to plan for than to discover at the table.
- If a guest has a serious medical allergy, they should follow the advice of their own doctor or allergist, and we will work to the instructions you give us.
- Tell us about the kitchen you will use, in case it has limited equipment.
How to choose the right class
Before you book anything, here are the questions worth answering.
How many people are cooking?
Private classes work well for couples through to larger villa parties. Tell us your numbers early, because the workspace, equipment and ingredient quantities depend on them.
Do you want to cook, or learn?
Some guests want a fun, social session that ends in a good lunch. Others want to understand a technique. Both are fine, but say which. A tapas afternoon and a French pastry workshop feel quite different.
Is the kitchen suitable?
Most villa kitchens in Granada and along the Costa Tropical are workable. If yours is small or sparsely equipped, mention it and we will plan accordingly.
Is it a class or a dinner?
If what you really want is to sit and be cooked for, a private dinner is a better fit. Our Private Dining Experience is listed at €250, and our menus run from €65 per person for Tapas of Andalusia to €110 per person for the Celebration Experience. Many guests combine the two: a class one day, a chef-cooked dinner on another.
Planning around an occasion
A class is a good centrepiece for a celebration. Typical occasions include:
- Birthdays, where the guest of honour cooks alongside friends.
- Anniversaries, for which we have a dedicated anniversary chef experience.
- Family gatherings, with several generations in one kitchen.
- Weddings and pre-wedding weekends, where a relaxed class gives the wedding party time together before the formal day.
If you are choosing between a class and a full chef-led menu for a celebration, our guides on why to hire a chef for celebrations and on how celebration menus honour guests will help you decide.
Preparing for your class
A little preparation makes the session smoother.
- Clear the counters. The more clear space, the easier it is for everyone to work.
- Check the basics. Hob, oven and a few sharp knives are usually enough, but tell us what is available.
- Wear comfortable clothes and closed shoes. An apron helps, though it is not essential.
- Think about drinks. Granada's local wines and a cold caña suit an afternoon of cooking. Plan what you would like to serve with the meal.
- Share the timetable. Mention arrival times, nap times for children and any evening plans.
If you want to prepare for a paella class specifically, our paella checklist and live cook-along guide is a good place to begin.
Where we teach
Our home base is Granada, and we work across Andalusia. Our service areas include Granada city, the Costa Tropical (Almuñécar, La Herradura, Salobreña and Motril), Nerja, Málaga, Marbella and the wider Costa del Sol. If your villa is outside these towns, ask. We would rather discuss it than assume.
A note on becoming a professional chef
Some readers who search for cooking classes are not looking for a holiday activity at all. They want a career in the kitchen. Spain's education ministry lists professional training in cooking under its hospitality and tourism vocational courses, including cooking and gastronomy programmes. That is the right route for formal qualifications. Our classes are for guests who want to cook well and enjoy it, not for professional certification.
